Daphné MANDEL 曼樂婷
BIOGRAPHY 1975 Born in Lausanne, Switzerland 2000 Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Paysage de Versailles, DPLG (Diplomé Par Le Gouvernement), Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning 1996 Université Paris-Sorbonne, DEUG Langues Civilisations Etrangères 1995 Ecole d’Architecture de Versailles, DEFA, Architecture Daphné Mandel completed her diploma of architecture, and urban planning in Versailles in 2000. Mainly working with painting, she credits her Dutch grandmother, a respected textile artist, Wilhelmina Fruytier, for inspiring her on her road of art appreciation and making. Currently living and working in Hong Kong, Mandel explores colonial Hong Kong architecture and abandoned sites such as villages and mansions, as a way to observe the process of evolution and metamorphosis of the city, through investigating the city’s hidden spaces and paradoxes in the urban landscapes. Her works are often infused with aesthetics of illusions, fantasies, and poetry. Mandel incorporates contemporary digital support and tactile traditional techniques when making her works, which conceptually echoes with Hong Kong’s urban aesthetic: one that is a juxtaposition of old and new, luxurious and polished, and untidied and derelict. Mandel’s works have been exhibited in solo shows organized by various art institutions, including Hong Kong Time Rift (Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong, 2022); Organic City (Pékin Fine Arts Gallery, Hong Kong, 2020); and Hong Kong Vanitas (Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, 2017). Group exhibitions include Small is Beautiful XXXIX (Flowers Gallery, London, 2021); Gimme Shelter (Pékin Fine Arts Gallery, Hong Kong, 2020); Photofairs Shanghai (Shanghai Exhibition Center, China 2019); Shek-O Sublime (Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong, 2019); and Hong Kong Dimensions (Blue Lotus Gallery, Hong Kong, 2018). Her work was part of the Hong Kong Spotlight by Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2020. Mandel co-founded the Paris based landscape architecture and urban planning firm Gilot & Mandel Paysage. Together with her partner, she was awarded the "Best Young Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture Professionals" by the French Ministry of Culture in 2006. Mandel is originally from France, and currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
