KO Sin Tung: A Closed Room

KO Sin Tung
A Closed Room

27 June – 25 July 2014

Gallery EXIT is pleased to present A Closed Room, KO Sin Tung’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

KO Sin Tung takes inspiration from contemporary aesthetization and marketization of everyday life. Man, being constantly engaged with the mass media, his authentic sense of space is radically displaced with a collective-subjectivity. This newly created displacement presupposes a new sense of space – one that is defined by images rather than walls.

The world, as filtered in A Closed Room, is disintegrated into a multifaceted totality in fragmentation under the artist’s distinctive aesthetic treatment. Fading, zooming and cropping are some of the aesthetic manipulations the artist applied to the featured canvas, photographs, installation and videos. The application of these manipulations flows crisscross on varied represented appearances, delving the way in which images are traditionally approached, consumed and distilled.

A sense of weakness and insecurity seems to hover A Closed Room. Home ornaments as depicted in Modern Home Collection appropriate the space of the “skirting board”. Framed for embellished purposes and slanted against the walls, the furnishings appearing in this series have been cropped out from online interior design materials. Blurred and pixelated, these purposeless objects exist solely for their aesthetic function, appearing as empty and unwanted conglomerate of the inside and the outside, exterior expressions of the interior, the encroachment of the social into the personal realm.

Ko Sin Tung (b. 1987) graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009 and is currently based in Hong Kong. Working across varied media, including painting, video and digital print, Ko Sin Tung reflects and responds to personal experiences by exploring the means of visual presentation. She is concerned with how images appear and are perceived regarding the psychological influences and functions they impart.
