Wilson SHIEH 石家豪
BIOGRAPHY Wilson SHIEH Born in 1970, Hong Kong Hong Kong-based artist Wilson Shieh has been widely known for his figurative paintings with the Chinese fine-brush (gongbi) technique, which involves a range of media - ink on silk, acrylic on canvas to paper cut-out collage, adding a contemporary lens onto traditional Chinese ink painting. Shieh’s works often discuss narratives derived from popular culture of East Asia and Hong Kong. Using human body as a motif, he blends it with architectures and other man-made products such as musical instruments, which queries in a humorous and imaginative light the identity of modern people and the autonomy towards our physical bodies. Shieh graduated with Fine Arts BA and MFA degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in 1994 and 2001 respectively. His recent solo shows include Wilson Shieh : Chop Suey 2008 - 2022 (PS Gallery, Hong Kong, 2022); Rewind – A Memoir in Music from the Childhood and Teenage of Wilson Shieh (7 Mallory Street, Hong Kong, 2020); Architecture Costume (Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2018); and Hi! Houses Project (Dr. Sun Yat-sen Museum, Hong Kong, 2017). (Hong Kong Museum of Art, 2021); Ink City (Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong, 2021); A Century of Women in Chinese Art (Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, U.K., 2018); and Ambiguously Yours - Gender in Hong Kong Popular Culture (M+ Pavilion, Hong Kong, 2017).
