BIOGRAPHY Tobe KAN Born in 1984, Hong Kong Tobe KAN was born in 1984 and currently lives and works in Hong Kong. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Art degree co-presented by RMIT University and Hong Kong Art School in 2017. In recent years, she has focused on observing the variety of vegetation that naturally coexists with human beings as she strolls. Her current artistic practice explores themes of liminality and impermanence, examining feelings of insecurity, alienation, and being forgotten. She also delves into concepts of existence, distance, and identity. Her work aims to reveal the uncanny and mysterious feelings of hovering between asleep and awake, dream and reality. She experiments with painting, drawing, and installation. She has exhibited her works in Hong Kong, Dallas USA, Taipei, Seoul, and Cambridge UK, and her works have been included in numerous collections. Her solo exhibitions include 'Stillness in Quietude - A Studio showcase by Tobe Kan' (Robinson College Chapel, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, 2023) and 'Peck-eyes Ravens' (CL3 Architects, Hong Kong 2018). She participated in solo exhibitions organised by Augustus Gallery include 'Zygomorphic Chromatic' (Dallas, 2023) and 'of war, of love, of time' (Dallas, 2022). Other solo exhibitions organised by Gallery EXIT include 'Liminal Interval' (Hong Kong, 2023), 'The Panacea' (Hong Kong, 2021). Her participation in group exhibitions includes ‘Frieze Seoul 2024’ (Gallery EXIT, Seoul, 2024) 'The Collectors Choice Art Exhibition' (Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2023), 'The Unsung' (Tai Kwun, Hong Kong, 2021), and 'TAKE 1' (Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 2019), among others. Kan took part in an artist residency program at the Robinson College of University of Cambridge in 2023, and a couple of the paintings she created during the residency are part of the College’s collection.
