KONG Chun Hei: Back unsay shades can go
KONG Chun Hei
Back unsay shades can go 20 October - 23 October 2016 Asia Now 2016 Booth A200 9, avenue Hoche, 75008 Paris For this exhibition, Back unsay shades can go, KONG Chun Hei will present a dual series of twelve drawings of meticulous surface reproduction. By producing copies of photocopies with technical pens, Kong’s work embodies manual and mechanical expressions, channelling ambiguity between the two. His precise rendering of machine-made photocopies conceals traces of human touch, while fine point strokes of ink reveal such traces on a micro scale. As the photocopied subjects carry visible physicality of their own, multiple layers of tactility and mechanicalness correlate in this intricate reproduction of reproduction, accentuated by streaks from the glitch of the photocopier. Accompanying the series is one video installation of a flat panel display horizontally supported by packaging expanded polystyrene on the ground. Presenting on screen is a metal plate in a state of being continuously hit by strong force. The silent video gradually brightens and darkens repeatedly. Hammering occurs only when the image completely fades out, revealing more dents every time light returns. These damage marks share visual associations with paper holes in the drawings, echoing soundlessly within the same space. |
