Lines of Flight  《

Lines of Flight

24 March – 7 May 2016

Gallery EXIT is pleased to announce 'Lines of Flight', a group exhibition featuring works by Yun Kyung JEONG, Yusuke KOMUTA, Arin Dwihartanto SUNARYO and TSANG Chui Mei. The works demonstrates a diversity of artistic paths which converge and diverge on different social strata, liberating people from the ossified dichotomies in society.

Yun Kyung JEONG (b. 1981, Incheon, Korea. Lives and works in London, UK) explores the link between the traditional and the contemporary, order and chaos. The natural elements of leaf, feather and flame, together with the use of black paint, seemingly resemble East Asian ink-and-wash paintings. However, the ambiguous abstract shapes generate multiple layers on the canvas, filling the paintings with free-spiritedness and aesthetic unruliness.

Yusuke KOMUTA (b. 1983, Osaka, Japan) devises paintings that synthesize geometrical patterns and vibrant color schemes based on the motif of origami. Via miscellaneous painterly approaches, including sanding and airbrushing, KOMUTA dedicates to transform the flattened canvas into a realm of illusion and abstraction.

Arin Dwihartanto SUNARYO (b. 1978, Bandung, Indonesia)’s works capture the spontaneity and question the tensions between natural and synthetic. Abandoning paintbrush, SUNARYO challenges the medium of painting and pushes the boundaries with innovative techniques by applying pigmented resin and volcanic ash with his hands. Accordingly, his paintings crystallize the dynamic creative process whilst searching the possibilities of painting today.

TSANG Chui Mei (b. 1972, Hong Kong, China) adopts lyrical themes and delicately depicts details in her paintings. The artworks are the visualisation of inner mental landscapes imbued with tranquility and a sense of nothingness. Nevertheless, the deployment of daily and natural elements suggests the entanglement between reality and mental space, giving the elusive scene  a sense of solidity.
