Art Taipei 2013
Sarah LAI 8 - 11 November 2013 Exhibition Hall One, Taipei World Trade Centre, Taiwan For Art Taipei 2013, Gallery EXIT will present Sarah Lai's fresh take on fruits through painting, sculpture and video. She surveys the idea of "still life" in classical art and how it is relevant today in our increasingly dematerialized world. By peeling, cutting and arranging lemons, watermelons, apples and bananas into compositional patterns, Lai exerts a austere precision through handling these daily consumables. Attention is shifted from mere reproduction towards a raw depiction of colour and form. The fruits she makes, encompassed in a subtle and unifying atmospheric haze, become a display for geometric perfection, ready to be regarded with fresh eyes. Sarah Lai received a BA in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2007. In the same year, she received Ramon Woon Creative Prize, Grotto Fine Arts's Creative Award and Cheng's Fine Arts Award in Western Painting. She is also a finalist of Sovereign Art Prize 2010. |
