Genevieve CHUA & Trevor YEUNG: shadow in the dark
Genevieve CHUA & Trevor YEUNG
shadow in the dark 21 October – 19 November 2011 Gallery EXIT is pleased to present "shadow in the dark", a joint exhibition between Genevieve Chua and Trevor Yeung. The artists share a common interest in exploring the fear of and ambiguities springing from the unknown. Whereas Chua’s process involves the reinterpretation of archetypal Southeast Asian horror to form new narratives, Yeung morphs his daily encounters and transform them into personal mythologies. In this exhibition, these fabricated narratives are realized through drawings, photography, video and installations. First shown in the Atelier at Singapore National Museum in 2010, Chua’s Full Moon and Foxes is part of a sequel exploring the themes of youth and sexuality. The video begins with the spirit of a fox waking up alone from the pack. Disengaged from her human vessel, she embarks on a search for other lost souls. The spirits’ nocturnal journey is a tale of transition and acceptance when they find their young corpuses have begun to decay. Adinandra Belukar is a set of black graphite drawings accompanied by a video animation of tree-crowns in night vision. Devoid of any narrative, silvery jagged graphite lines shimmer against their black background. The title refers to regrowth vegetation on degraded soils, where primary forests had been cleared for development. Only specific species survive in these conditions and they occupy much of the marginalized spaces throughout Singapore. Yeung obsessively marks the surface of wood with improvisatory triangular mesh, which is the basis of the ongoing Patience Practice series. The act of drawing is one of restraint as each stroke is the artist’s tool of distraction. The same patterns reappear in Yeung’s hidden-shot prints where he makes an attempt to preserve and possess the subject. His works hold an antagony between longing and fear of interaction. Genevieve Chua participated in the Singapore Biennale 2011 and the BMW Young Artist Series at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (2010). Recent solo exhibitions include “Raised as a Pack of Wolves” presented by the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival (2009) and “Full Moon and Foxes”, an installation commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore as part of the Singapore Art Show (2009). Chua graduated from Lasalle-SIA College of Arts Singapore in 2004. Trevor Yeung graduated from Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2010. He is the recipient of the Blue Lotus Gallery Award at the 2010 graduate exhibition and subsequently had his first solo show “C erry Pop”. Yeung also had a solo installation “System01” at the 1A Space Booth, ART HK 11. |
近來的個人展覽包括新加坡M1藝穗節內的《Raised as a Pack of Wolves》(2009)及被新加坡國家博物館委託創作的裝置藝術《Full Moon and Foxes》(2009)。 |
