Stanley SHUM 沈軍翰

BIOGRAPHY

Stanley SHUM Kwan Hon
Born in 1989, Hong Kong

Stanley Shum Kwan Hon is currently based in Hong Kong. With an emphasis in oil painting, Shum’s expressive works investigate the mentality of individual and social ideologies of the reality, discussing psychologies of contemporary people, concepts of social and personal disorder, and human conditions such as depression and hollowness. Shum marries realistic and metaphorical sceneries on his canvases by infusing imaginary scenes with nature and man-made urban landscapes, creating a state of tension, confusion and melancholy.

Shum graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013. He has received numerous awards and scholarships, including Best Student from Each Concentration Award - Visual Arts (HKBU) in 2010; Cheung’s Fine Arts Award (Western Painting), Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship, the Cheng Foundation Scholarship, and CUHK Convocation Outstanding Creativity Student Award, all in 2013.

He has participated exhibitions including solo shows Love is all you need (SC Gallery, Hong Kong, 2022); The Blazing World (Gallery EXIT, Hong Kong, 2020); and The Dark Scene (Compton Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 2015). Selected group exhibitions include Shining Moment (Tang Art Foundation, Hong Kong, 2021); Tongueless (Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, 2020); Hidden Body (AISHONANZUKA, Hong Kong, 2017); and Critical Existentialism (Hong Kong Visual Art Center Gallery, 2015). Shum’s works are part of the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection and private collections in the US, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Singapore.
