BIOGRAPHY
Daphné Mandel (b. 1975, Lausanne, Switzerland) completed her diploma of architecture, and urban planning in Versailles in 2000. Mainly working with painting, she credits her Dutch grandmother, a respected textile artist, Wilhelmina Fruytier, for inspiring her on her road of art appreciation and making. Currently living and working in Hong Kong, Mandel explores colonial Hong Kong architecture and abandoned sites such as villages and mansions, as a way to observe the process of evolution and metamorphosis of the city, through investigating the city’s hidden spaces and paradoxes in the urban landscapes. Her works are often infused with aesthetics of illusions, fantasies, and poetry. Mandel incorporates contemporary digital support and tactile traditional techniques when making her works, which conceptually echoes with Hong Kong’s urban aesthetic: one that is a juxtaposition of old and new, luxurious and polished, and untidied and derelict. Mandel’s works have been featured in various exhibitions organised by Gallery EXIT, including solo exhibition 'Their Memories’ (Hong Kong, 2024), 'Hong Kong Time Rift' (Hong Kong, 2022) and group exhibition 'Shek-O Sublime' (Hong Kong, 2019). Her works has also presented by EXIT at various art fairs, such as 'Art Basel Hong Kong' (Hong Kong, 2022-2026), 'Taipei Dangdai 2024' (Taipei, 2024), and 'ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair' (Shanghai, 2023). Her other solo exhibitions include 'Organic City' (Pékin Fine Arts Gallery, Hong Kong, 2020), 'Hong Kong Vanitas' (Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, 2017), and 'Small is Beautiful XXXIX' (Flowers Gallery, London, 2021). Other group exhibitions include 'PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai' (Shanghai, 2019) and 'Hong Kong Dimensions' (Blue Lotus Gallery, Hong Kong, 2018). Mandel co-founded the Paris based landscape architecture and urban planning firm Gilot & Mandel Paysage. Together with her partner, she was awarded the "Best Young Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture Professionals" by the French Ministry of Culture in 2006. The artist is originally from France, and currently lives and works in Hong Kong.
