BIOGRAPHY Chihoi(b. in 1977, Hong Kong) is a self-taught artist who has had strong interest in drawing, and later, experimental comics, since his childhood. He graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1999 and began his story-telling journey since then. His practice mainly involves painting, comics, illustrations, and publications. Recently he also started exploring to project his paintings as slides. Adopting the Hong Kong urban sceneries as an inspiration as well as a constant motif, his works often express a poetic and dreamy ambient, documenting the changes in Hong Kong while evoking emotions and memories. Chihoi’s works has been shown locally and internationally since 1999, including solo shows at Gallery EXIT in Hong Kong: ‘Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’ (2022), and New Dust (2014). Other recent solos include ‘Chihoi: Leeway’ (Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong, 2024), ‘Insert A Page’, (Grafixx Festival/ De Studio, Antwerp, 2022), ‘Time Effaces Time’ (Project Fulfill Art Space, Taipei, 2021), ‘Panorama Reflection of the Tortoise and the Hare – Duo Exhibition by Chihoi & Son Ni’ (JXJ Gallery, Taipei, 2020), ‘Library & 6F Basement’ (ACO Art Space, Hong Kong, 2019), ‘A Very Long Walk’ (Taipei Dangdai Art Fair, Taipei, 2019), and ‘The Library and the Reading Room’ (Mangasick, Taipei, 2018). His group show participations include ‘Plaine-Lagon Revue’ (La Villa Belleville, Paris, 2022), ‘Drive My Car’ (The Hall, Taipei, 2022), ‘On Paper’ (Project Fulfill Art Space, Taipei, 2022), ‘One Escape at a Time’ (the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Seoul Museum of Art, 2021), ‘Holiday Dance’ (Book Gallery Popotame, Tokyo, 2017), and ‘Tell a Rock to Relax’ (We Make It Studio, Berlin, 2015). Chihoi has also been an active creator of comics, and he is a partner of independent publisher ‘nos:books’. Since 1996, his comics and illustrations have been published in Hong Kong and appear in various international anthologies. His major comic books include Library; I’m With My Saint (2018), The Train (2007), Hijacking – Comic Hong Kong Literature (co-drawn with Kongkee, 2007) and Still Life (2003). His comics have been translated into Italian, French, English and Finnish. The artist currently lives and works between Hong Kong and Taipei.
