3/F, Gallery EXIT Gallery EXIT presents 'Good Morning, Sweet Dreams – Time Blindness', a solo exhibition by KWONG Wing Kwan featuring a new body of oil paintings. Drawing on her awareness of shock, fear, and the shifting conditions of the world, Kwong condenses narrative traces into scenes that register as psychological projections. Continuing her 'Good Morning, Sweet Dreams' series, she renders contrasts between interior and exterior, tenderness and tension, familiarity and distance. The exhibition’s English title, 'Time Blindness', suggests disorientation in the passage of time: we sometimes struggle to perceive how time passes or gauge its duration. The Chinese title (延促同時), points to a perception of time that shifts with the mind: long stretches and fleeting instants are not wholly distinct. Echoing the works’ evocation of day turning to night and places near and far facing one another, temporal sequence and duration become fluid and ambiguous. Kwong’s works move between these two perceptions of time. Beginning with a desire to visit friends and family who have moved far away, Kwong gradually transformed earlier anxieties associated with air travel into reflections on time, memory, and emotional states. Later, a photograph of a sunset on the eve of a storm, sent by her mother from her home region of Hainan Island, brought back a memory of being aboard an airplane and became a further thread in her thinking about distance, time, and the pull of emotion. Kwong has long been drawn to pre-storm clouds and towering cumulonimbus formations: magnificent and seductive, they also subtly foreshadow changes in the weather. In her paintings, these clouds linger across different geographies; within the slippage between day and night, they gather enduring longing and inner turbulence. The 'Midnight Sun 01:00–12:00' series extends the artist’s ongoing meditation on home and distance. Since first exhibiting the 'Good Morning, Sweet Dreams' series, Kwong has occasionally received photographs of sunrises and sunsets from friends and family. Some of these images are folded into this group of works and layered with views from an airplane, in which the time of day is difficult to discern. The sun that traverses the picture plane without ever setting records her connection to distant places, blurring the boundaries of place and time while reflecting a shift in her own state of mind. KWONG Wing Kwan (b. 1988, Hong Kong) received her BA in Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012.
