Gallery EXIT is pleased to present "Shek-O Sublime" commissioned by artist / curator / collector Caroline CHIU. The exhibition will open on 12 January 2019 and remain on view through 9 March 2019. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, 12 January from 3pm to 7pm. The exhibition also marks a special celebration as Gallery EXIT begins business in it's 10th year in Hong Kong. Special programming will take place during the opening of Shek-O Sublime, with flower jam of fallen mangrove branches at 3pm, a talk on the relationship between Luis CHAN and Shek-O presented by Dr. Jack LEE at 4pm, and sharing sessions will be delivered by the curator.
CHIU invited 24 artists to spend time, sometimes days, experiencing the small village and invited them to reflect their personal experiences in these newly commissioned works. Sublime refers to the idea "of very great excellence or beauty, extreme". CHIU asked the artists to consider a series of essays, "The Sublime-Documents in Contemporary Art" published by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2010, in which different artists relate to the movement in their own words. She also drew their attention to the work of modern Hong Kong master, Luis CHAN and the paintings he made in Shek-O.
The idea for the exhibition began with CHIU's love of the nature around Shek-O, a village nestled in a valley surrounded by the Dragon's Back mountains, Big Wave Bay, the peninsula of Cape D'aguilar and bordered by the open ocean to the East. The exhibition idea then expanded to the idea of this particular place- or place-making, and how life in Shek-O is so different to life in central Hong Kong. And finally, by highlighting the essays and thinking of the sublime in the context of art history, another layer of connection is created. CHIU seeks to present the exhibition in a multi-perspective way, in order to break the practice of definitive view towards a location. The exhibition happily fosters the questioning and investigation of these 24 artists, young and old, historical and emerging, on the ways of looking at a particular location.
